The organisation was created in 2006
with a vision of establishing a modern, world-class facility that serves the needs of the scientific community in
South Africa by providing state-of-the-art services, technical expertise and collaborative research capabilities
in the high throughput genomics and proteomics sectors. Amongst its membership the CPGR features some of the most prominent tertiary institutions in South Africa, such as University of Cape Town (UCT) and University of Stellenbosch (US), and renowned international organizations FIND (Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics).
Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics were identified as key components of a thriving innovation continuum and the CPGR has been established to address critical gaps in the system. The primary purpose of the organization is to create, retain and attract value in South Africa for the benefit of a growing bio-economy.
Amongst others, this value can be measured by the increase in the number and quality of publications, patents registered, human resources created and retained, biological samples analyzed in South Africa, business opportunities created, funding attracted, or investments made in the sector by private and public entities.
