H3 Africa
19 June 2012, Cape Town, RSA
The Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3 Africa)) Initiative aims to facilitate a contemporary research approach to the study of genomics and environmental determinants of common diseases with the goal of improving the health of African populations. To accomplish this, the H3Africa Initiative aims to contribute to the development of the necessary expertise among African scientists, and to establish networks of African investigators.
To date, we have received a considerable number of requests for support of collaborative project applications. Taking into account that the application deadline for the current call is 29 October 2012 (letters of intent to be submitted by 29 September 2012), we kindly invite parties who are interested in including the Centre for Proteomic and Genomic Research (CPGR) in a grant application to contact us as early as possible in the grant writing process. This will help us to provide all resources necessary to bring your application to a successful completion.
In order to support your application, feel free to contact the CPGR at any time in the process.

CPGR celebrates its sixth birthday!
04 April 2012, Cape Town, RSA
From being a local core facility offering DNA arrays, Affymetrix and mass spectrometry services we have evolved into an internationally recognised organization running large 'omics' projects in a diversity of scientific areas related to human health and the agri-sciences with researchers and institutions across South Africa.
None of this would have been possible without the relentless efforts of our staff, directors, and funders, and the continuous support we get from our customers.
Thank you!

CPGR Launches e-Learning Intitiative
15 March 2012, Cape Town, RSA
As part of a human capital development programme the CPGR has proposed an e-learning initiative to support the development of suitably trained young scientists in the life sciences and biotech industry. For now, it is called UKUFUNDA (the Xhosa word for learning) and will focus on areas such as proteomics, genomics, statistics and bioinformatics. It is envisioned that the portal will have a series lectures, tutorials, videos and animations, a wiki for exchanging protocols, forums and more. We also foresee that the site will have social networking functionality to encourage communication and engagement between scientists - the inexperienced and the experts. In order to assess the need and feasibility of such a project we have designed a brief survey which is available here. Ukufunda

Maize eQTL Field Sampling Trip 2011
8th April 2011, Cape Town, RSA
Since 2006, CPGR has been part of the consortium working on the TIA-funded project "Genomics of quantitative disease resistance in African Maize Varieties". The consortium visits the maize fields in KZN every summer in order to evaluate the disease severity of the fungal pathogen Grey Leaf Spot (GLS). Seen here are researchers from CPGR, the University of Pretoria, the African Centre for Crop Improvement and PANNAR Seeds, collecting GLS-infected leaf material at Cedara and Greytown on the 23rd and 24th of March 2011. The samples will be processed at CPGR and used in qPCR gene expression studies.

Joint International Conference of the African and Southern African Societies of Human Genetics
10 March 2011, Cape Town, RSA
The CPGR exhibited at the Joint International Conference of the African and Southern African Societies of Human Genetics at the CTICC from the 6 to the 10 March 2011 (http://www.humangenetics2011.org/programme.htm). The main focus of the joint conference was on human genetics research in Africa, the developments and the highlights. The conference was well attended, attracting over 500 delegates and a great number of eminent international speakers including Prof. Edison T. Liu and Sir Mark Walport. The talks were opened with a plenary from Dr Sydney Brennar and the presentations over the 5 days provided an insight to some ground-breaking genomic and translational research taking place in Africa. An Affymetrix Medical Genomics workshop complemented the human genetics conference. This satellite event was opened by Izak van Niekerk, followed by seven talks on the advances of diagnostics based on the Affymetrix technology. This highly intellectual event proved to be a great networking experience and we look forward to next year's event.
